The way you tie the wonderful, troubling film “Easy Rider,” Woodstock, English football, the Beatles, and more to our 250th anniversary is ingenious. I do think we need the joy of Mardi Gras, music and maybe magic mushrooms more than ever.

So glad you liked it, Ruth!

I felt compelled to mention English football, since (as I suspect) there'll be no more to say on the subject after tonight 😉

I haven't seen the movie in many years, but your review of its many powerful scenes shows how it still resonates today.

Kind of you to say.

There was a lot I learned while preparing this issue I had to leave out. Did you know that Fonda and Hopper basically hated each other as a result of their collaboration on the film?

(Also, interesting coincidence that we both posted about "third places" on the same weekend!)

I'd be more surprised if anyone who worked with them came away liking them :)

I need to see that movie again--there are definitely parts you describe that I have never seen and/or don't remember at all. Maybe because it was a censored version on television. I never saw it in theaters.

I never saw it on the big screen either. But when I was in high school, my friends and I took turns renting it on VHS.

Re-watching it recently, it's a lot darker than I remembered. Or maybe, America is in a darker place in general? 😨

Definitely dark, especially the ending. But for me, what I remember most is the motorcycle journey and nothing about Mexico or New Orleans.
